D2C FMCG Content Lifecycle Journey

A content-led lifecycle journey for a fictional D2C hair-care brand serving Indian consumers who want a simpler way to choose, use and continue with an everyday hair-care routine.

Primary journey: Hair Routine Quiz discovery > consented routine guidance > Trial Kit or Bundle consideration > Trial Kit purchase > post-purchase education > experience check-in and review -> full-size routine or weekly-care recommendation.

Root & Rise Project

Business Challenge

Hair-care shoppers can face too much choice, unclear product roles and pressure to commit to full sizes before they understand what might fit their own wash-day habits. A generic promotional sequence can add to that confusion.

This project explores a more useful approach: use a short quiz to guide first-time visitors towards a simple routine, give them a low-commitment Trial Kit option, and provide product-use education before asking for feedback or suggesting a relevant full-size next step.

"I have concerns such as frizz, dryness, dullness or weak-looking hair, but I do not want a complicated routine or exaggerated promises. Help me choose a sensible starting point, show me how to use it, and let me decide what to do next."

Project Goals

Help

Help first-time visitors identify a simple, relevant routine path.

Convert

Convert high-intent visitors into consented leads or first-time buyers without relying on a hard sell.

Improve

Improve the first-use experience for Trial Kit purchasers.

Collect

Collect useful, permissioned feedback after a reasonable use period.

Encourage

Encourage an informed move to a full-size routine or relevant weekly-care product.

Demonstrate

Demonstrate how website copy, lifecycle email, workflow logic and measurement work together.

Project at a glance

Industry: FMCG / D2C hair care

Brand: Root & Rise Hair Care, a fictional brand created for portfolio demonstration

Audience: Indian consumers managing concerns such as frizz, dryness, dullness, rough-feeling lengths and weak-looking hair

Core channels: Website, product pages, hair routine quiz, lifecycle email, review page, FAQ and preference centre

Key capabilities: Lifecycle strategy, content design, audience segmentation, workflow logic, customer-experience safeguards, A/B-test planning and measurement

Strategy & Business Brief

Business objective: Show how content, segmentation and workflow logic can turn an uncertain first-time visitor into a confident, repeat Root & Rise customer - without relying on discounts or exaggerated claims.

Project scope

In scope: Discovery through Trial Kit purchase, post-purchase education, review collection, and full-size or weekly-care consideration.

Out of scope: Paid media planning, influencer partnerships, and platform selection or build - the workflows are written to work with any comparable CRM or marketing-automation platform.

Journey outcome: A first-time visitor who isn't sure what to buy completes a short quiz, receives a routine recommendation, tries a low-commitment Trial Kit, and if it fits, moves on to a full-size routine or a relevant weekly-care product, all on a consented, education-first basis.

Practical guardrails: See "Workflow, Consent and Safeguards" below for the full list. In short: transactional and marketing messages stay separate, follow-up requires recorded consent, and no claim goes beyond ordinary cosmetic/cleansing benefits.

Workflow and Safeguards

The journey is deliberately designed around responsible lifecycle principles:
    • Transactional order and delivery communication remain separate from marketing messages.
    • Marketing follow-up requires a valid, recorded consent basis.
    • Post-purchase timing uses delivery confirmation where possible, rather than assuming a customer has received the product.
    • Cancelled, refunded or unresolved support cases are excluded from promotional journeys.
    • Review requests occur only after a reasonable use period and require moderation guidance.
    • No copy uses medical, hair-regrowth, cure or guaranteed-result claims.
    • Marketing communications include preference and unsubscribe controls.

Measurement Plan

Primary D2C outcome: Qualified routine-conversion rate - the percentage of quiz completers who purchase a Trial Kit or recommended routine within a defined window.

Primary post-purchase outcome: Trial-to-full-size conversion rate within a defined post-delivery window, such as 30 days.

Supporting metrics:

  • Quiz-start and quiz-completion rate
  • Email-consent rate
  • Welcome and routine-guide meaningful-click rate
  • Product, Trial Kit and Bundle page visits
  • Add-to-cart and checkout-start rate
  • Review request click and completion rate
  • Bundle consideration and weekly-care interest rate
  • Repeat-purchase rate
  • Unsubscribe, preference-pause, support-case and refund/cancellation rate

Test Hypotheses

Two focused hypotheses guide the first phase of testing on this journey.

Quiz-to-Purchase Hypothesis

For visitors uncertain about full-size products, a value-led Trial Kit CTA will generate more qualified first-purchase conversions than a discount-led CTA.
Primary metric: Qualified routine-conversion rate (the share of quiz completers who purchase within a defined window).

Post-Purchase Hypothesis

A post-delivery email focused on clear product-use guidance will create more full-size routine consideration than an email that introduces a purchase offer immediately.
Primary metric: Trial-to-full-size conversion rate within a defined post-delivery window (for example, 30 days).

Both test whether relevance and education outperform discount- and offer-led messaging, consistent with the rest of the journey's no-hard-sell approach.

Portfolio Disclosure

Root & Rise is a fictional brand created for an independent marketing-automation portfolio. Audience logic, workflow timings, conversion assumptions, KPIs and test hypotheses are illustrative. A real implementation would require validation against real customer research, product information, e-commerce and delivery data, consent records, legal requirements, customer-service policy and the selected CRM or marketing-automation platform.
